The Wynberg Business District manages the public space in Wynberg, Johannesburg. It’s aim is to provide a safe, clean and connected environment in which businesses and communities in the district can thrive. The Wynberg Business District was formerly known as the Wynberg Improvement District. Recently the brand and image has been refreshed to reflect the vision that the organisation has for Wynberg; that of creating a vibrant light industrial business district that serves all the significant stakeholders in the area such as business owners, property owners, staff and visitors to the precinct.
The Wynberg Business District (commonly known as the WBD) is a not for profit organisation that draws its lifeblood from committed property owners in Wynberg. There are over 180 property owners who contribute and sustain the organisation which in turn allows it to provide services such as additional security and patrolling of the public space, management and tidying of the public property as well as connecting the public in Wynberg with the right City public service departments.
The current WBD was originally constituted as the Wynberg Action Group in 1998 and has been serving the property owners in the area faithfully ever since then under the oversight of a board of Directors. In 2004 it was rebranded to the Wynberg Improvement District and was managed by various appointed ‘managing agents’ until recently when a decision was taken by the current Board to become a self-managed public benefit company.
The purpose of the WBD has at all times remained the same and that is to safeguard the property rights of property owners in the area and to ensure the longevity and productivity of Wynberg. As the city landscape has changed over the past two decades Wynberg’s role in serving the Sandton node and surrounds has become even more important and the WBD is similarly evolving to better play its part in the transformation that is underway.
The WBD is run and managed by committed, involved members of the Wynberg community to the benefit of all who participate in the economic activity in Wynberg: property owners, business owners, staff, visitors and public servants.
In order to keep Wynberg well managed the WBD continues to provide the following services:
Wynberg is an actively managed area and as a result we will maintain the profile of Wynberg as an attractive business destination.
The foremost service delivery in Wynberg comes through the dedicated Operations Manager to the Wynberg Business District, Mr Basil Ngakane. In addition to interacting with and assisting property owners and businesses in Wynberg, Basil is responsible for the daily monitoring and management of the various appointed service providers, liaising with City of Johannesburg service delivery departments and effectively delivering against the business plan of the Wynberg Business District.
The WBD has appointed private service providers to augment public service delivery with a Public Safety Plan; a Public Space Management Plan and a plan to Connect all the stakeholders in the District.
Public Safety Plan: the WBD has appointed a private security company, 24/7 Security, to supply extra security guards, vehicle patrols and monitoring of the suburb.
Public Space Management: the WBD has appointed Excellerate Services to clean and maintain the public space. There are 9 permanent cleaners and 3 dedicated maintenance staff serving Wynberg daily Monday to Saturday. Routinely, the Excellerate team remove 400-500 black bags of rubbish and litter from Wynberg streets, per week!
Wynberg Connect: the WBD team can be contacted on a centrally managed telephone number and email address, routing queries and assisting where possible. WBD markets and actively works to enhance the image of Wynberg.
In addition to logging service delivery requests on behalf of property owners in Wynberg, WBD has key relationships with each of the necessary service delivery departments from the City and Province, namely and not limited to:

Basil joined WBD as it’s first full time Operations Manager. He is dedicated to the matters related to the Wynberg Business District and despite only being appointed in July 2018, he has already made a significant impact on the local community and service provision. Basil describes himself as a friendly and passionate person committed to making a difference in Wynberg. He holds various certifications and is actively pursuing his studies in managing public institutions.

Safe: We will respond to any public assistance required relating to criminal activity, accidents, protests and law enforcement. In addition, we’ll provide escort services late at night and early in the morning when additional company may be a welcomed comfort. The 24/7 Control room can be contacted for urgent matters:

Clean: We’ll ensure the front of your property is kept clean and orderly. From checking trenching contractors restore pavements properly, to sweeping.
Connected: We’ll report any public service delivery issue for you; we’ll monitor it and follow it up for you. These can be anything from power outages, water leaks, faulty traffic lights, by law infringement, health and environment matters, road surfaces and pavement

24/7 Security Services, established in 2004, provides integrated security solutions by combining manpower with the latest security technology. Owner managed and driven, the company was born out of a need for a South African security services provider that understands South Africa’s unique security landscape and needs.
